L'église unie est en train de se demander si elle ne va pas "lancer la serviette", en un titre il est vrai assez provocateur:
Will the united church thrown in the towel?
the United Church of Canada has seen dramatic drops in membership. There are now 3,400 United Church congregations; since 1996, the Church has lost about 460 parishes. The Church reports a membership of 558,000, down 21% since 1996.
Voici des stats:
Keith McKerracher, in a study created for the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC) analyzed religious data from 1961 to 2001. During this interval, membership in the ACC dropped from 1.36 million to 642,000 -- a reduction of 53% 3 By itself, this is distressing news for the denomination. However the full picture of the decline is only evident when the rise in the total population of Canada is factored in. The population rose from 18,238,247 to 27,296,856 -- an increase of 50%. 4 Out of every 1,000 Canadians, the number of Anglicans dropped from 75 in 1961 to 23 in 2001 -- a drop of 69%.
McKerracher concluded that the ACC was losing about 13,000 members a year -- a little over 2% yearly -- and "...is facing extinction by the middle of this century." 3
He also reported on the membership of the United Church of Canada (UCC), which is now approximately equal in size to the ACC. The UCC membership dropped from 1.04 million to 638,000 -- a reduction of 39%. Out of every 1,000 Canadians, the number of United Church members dropped from 57 in 1961 to 23 in 2001 -- a drop of 60%.
Et ces données sont optimistes car en 2008, la United Church donne des chiffres de 558,000, plus bas encore.
1965 was the peak of Membership in the United Church of Canada.
Between 1945 to 1965, UCCan Membership increased by 42% from 750,000 to 1,064,000.
If we had been able to maintain the 1945-1965 rate (see Foot Note 1) of growth from 1966 to 2005, our Membership would have been 1,789,000 by 2005. Our reported Membership for 2005 was 573,000 a decline of 46%.
Compared to where we thought we'd thought be in the 1960's, we are missing 1,200,000 members. Or, to put it another way, our congregations should have three times more members and attendance than we currently have.
....In 2005, our Membership is 1.77% of the Canadian population. If this trend continues unchanged, we will be at 0.0% of the Canadian population by the year 2022.
